Understanding Google Knowledge Panel: What It Is, Who Makes It, and Why It Matters

What is Google Knowledge Panel?

Imagine searching online for info about a celebrity, a famous company, or a vacation spot. When you search on Google, you often see a box on the right side/ centre of the page for the results. This box is the Google Knowledge Panel. It gives you quick, organized details about what you’re looking for without needing to click more links.

Check out the example below: Taylor Swift doesn’t have Google My Business account/page; you will see a Knowledge Panel in the search results.

The Knowledge Panel is there to give you quick, reliable information without making you click through multiple links

What Can Businesses Do?

To appear in a Google Knowledge Panel:

  • Keep your branding consistent on social media like LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram
  • Create as many relevant social media accounts (relevant to your business)
  • Have a clear, updated website
  • Get listed on various news platforms through press releases, or listicles (For example: If you are a local B&B, you want to be seen as a listing in trip Advisor for listing)

How Google Knowledge Panels Work

Google Knowledge Panels are created automatically using information from Google’s Knowledge Graph, a large database of facts from the web, including Wikipedia, Wikidata, Crunchbase, and LinkedIn.

Here’s how it works in simple steps:

  1. Google figures out what you are searching for.
  2. Google chooses a layout that fits the search.
  3. Google adds the information to the layout.
  4. The search results and the knowledge panel appear together.

Images in Knowledge Panels

Claimed Panels: People or businesses can choose a main image.

Unclaimed Panels: Google automatically picks images from Google Images.

Updates and Edits

Knowledge panels update automatically with new information. If your name or business is in a knowledge panel, you can claim it and suggest changes to keep it accurate.

Why Does Google Knowledge Panel Matter?

Google Knowledge Panels help your SEO by making you more visible and trusted on Google, attracting more clicks. They improve your brand image and drive more traffic to your website with direct links and useful information.
