How Reddit Ads Target Audiences Differently From Meta

Reddit Ads allow businesses to target audiences based on interests, communities and other signals related to the content people engage with on the platform. While Meta relies heavily on behavioural data to predict who might be interested in a product or service, Reddit offers opportunities to reach people based on the topics and communities they actively engage with. When people compare advertising platforms, the conversation usually starts with cost. What’s the CPM? What’s the CPC? What’s the cost per conversion?

Those numbers matter, but they don’t tell the whole story.

One of the more interesting differences between Reddit and Meta is the type of information each platform has about its users. And that difference can help explain why the two platforms can perform very differently, even when you’re advertising the same product or service.

Two Very Different Signals

Meta is incredibly good at making predictions.

Based on the things we do online, Meta can build a pretty detailed picture of what we’re interested in. The content we interact with, the ads we click, the accounts we follow and the actions we take all contribute to the platform’s understanding of who we might be and what we might be interested in.

It’s a powerful system because the user doesn’t have to explicitly tell Meta what they’re looking for. The platform can infer it from behaviour.

Reddit gives us something a little different.

If someone joins a subreddit, reads posts, comments and actively participates in conversations about a specific topic, they’re giving us a much more direct signal about what interests them.

They’re not just being predicted to have an interest in something. They’re actively showing that interest.

And that’s an important distinction when we’re thinking about advertising.

Why Does That Matter for Conversions?

There’s an obvious counterargument here: just because someone is interested in a topic doesn’t mean they’re ready to buy something.

That’s absolutely true.

Someone can spend hours reading about hiking without buying hiking boots. Someone can spend months researching skincare without ever becoming a customer.

But that’s also what makes Reddit interesting for certain types of businesses.

People aren’t just scrolling past content. They’re often actively looking for information, asking questions, comparing experiences and trying to solve a problem.

That can create a very different environment for advertising, particularly when the product or service requires some consideration before someone takes action.

Reddit has also been increasingly focused on lower-funnel advertising, with performance and lower-funnel campaigns now making up a significant share of its ad business. The platform has reported improvements in conversions delivered per dollar of spend as its advertising products have developed.

The important takeaway isn’t that Reddit suddenly “converts better.”

It’s that the type of intent available on the platform can be valuable when it aligns with what you’re selling.

There Is a Trade-Off

Of course, there isn’t a magic platform that gives you all the benefits with none of the drawbacks.

Reddit’s targeting can be incredibly specific, but that specificity can come with a smaller audience. A niche subreddit might give you a highly relevant group of people, but you’re not going to reach the same number of people as you would with a broad Meta audience.

Creative on Reddit is also a little different.

Reddit users tend to have a pretty strong radar for advertising that feels out of place. A creative that works perfectly well on Instagram may need a completely different approach when it’s appearing in a community where people are used to having genuine conversations.

And then there’s the biggest consideration: does your audience actually have a community on Reddit?

If your customers aren’t actively discussing the problem you’re solving, subreddit targeting probably isn’t going to be the secret weapon you’re looking for.

So When Does Reddit Make Sense?

This is where the comparison gets more useful.

Rather than asking which platform is better, ask which platform better matches the way your customers make decisions.

Reddit can be particularly interesting for niche or considered purchases where people spend time researching, asking questions or looking for recommendations before they buy.

Meta, on the other hand, has an incredible ability to find potential customers based on patterns in behaviour. That scale and predictive targeting can be incredibly valuable, particularly for products and services with broader appeal.

They’re solving slightly different problems.

It’s Not About Picking a Winner

The best platform is the one that fits the way your customers think, search and make decisions.
