What Makes Content Shareable?

So, what makes people hit that share button? Why do some posts get shared over and over again, while others get forgotten? Here’s what to keep in mind if you want your content to go viral—or at least spread beyond your followers.

1. It’s Valuable or Useful

  • Does your post solve a problem or answer a question?
  • Content that educates, offers tips, or provides resources gets shared more.
  • People want to share things that add value to their own network.

Example:

  • A simple how-to guide or a quick fix to a common problem.

2. It’s Relatable

  • Does your post speak to your audience’s emotions or experiences?
  • Content that connects on a personal level is more likely to be shared.
  • If people see themselves in your post, they’re more inclined to share it.

Example:

  • A funny or relatable meme about working from home during the pandemic.

3. It’s Entertaining or Thought-Provoking

  • Does your post make people laugh, smile, or think?
  • Posts that entertain or spark conversation are more shareable.
  • If it’s engaging, people want to pass it along to others.

Example:

  • A witty quote, a clever video, or a thought-provoking question.

4. It’s Visually Appealing

  • Is your post eye-catching and easy to consume?
  • People share content that looks good—whether it’s a beautifully designed image or a well-edited video.
  • The more appealing your content, the more likely it is to be passed around.

Example:

  • High-quality photos, infographics, or sleek videos.

5. It Evokes a Strong Emotional Response

  • Does your post make people feel something deeply?
  • Posts that trigger emotions—whether joy, surprise, inspiration, or even outrage—get shared.
  • People want to share things that make them feel connected to others.

Example:

  • A heartwarming story or a post that highlights a social cause.

6. It’s Timely or Relevant

  • Does your post tie into current events or trends?
  • Content that’s timely and relevant is more likely to be shared.
  • People want to share information that’s fresh and up-to-date.

Example:

  • A post about a trending news topic or seasonal content.

What Can You Do?

  • Be consistent with your message.
  • Post content that encourages interaction.
  • Stay tuned to what’s happening around you and jump on relevant trends.

Think about it: What’s one piece of content you’ve shared recently? Why did you share it?

And now, how can you create something that your audience can’t help but share?
